Good air conditioning is a must for most of the United States. With almost 90% of households having cooling, it’s a must for most of the country to stay cool during the summer months.
However, your AC is only as good as its health and how much you care for it. Luckily, there are many things you can do to care for your air conditioner. Follow the AC maintenance checklist below each year.
Change the Filter
One of the primary tasks you should do in your HVAC checklist is regularly changing your filter. Your filter stops dirt and debris from entering your vents, but it can become clogged and less effective as time goes on.
Ideally, change your filter every few months. Pay attention to the size required for your AC unit and find a compatible replacement filter. Doing this will ensure good airflow and a properly running system.
Clean the Condensation Line
Your AC has a lot of condensation buildup when it runs. The humidity causes it to form inside the unit, which means it needs a line to drain from the air conditioner. If you let condensation and other debris build up in the line, it can eventually clog and cause a leak.
You must ensure this line is clean as part of your cooling system maintenance. There are many cleaning products available to help you clear it.
Clear the Outdoor Debris
If you have an outdoor unit, the chances are good that debris will get into the unit. These are things like leaves, branches, and other random objects.
Debris like this can impact the functioning of the AC if it gets too bad. Set a schedule to clear the debris from around your AC unit and any debris that makes it into the system.
Verify the Airflow
The last thing you want is poor airflow with your air conditioner. It will make it harder to cool your home and your unit to stay on longer than necessary.
Put your hand over some of your vents to verify you’re getting good cooling. If not, you may need to call an AC servicing company to inspect your AC and find potential problems.
Get a Tune-Up
Although you can handle many regular air conditioning system tasks yourself, there are some things you may not be able to search for yourself. You don’t have the knowledge an experienced professional has to find potential issues.
Consider getting a tune-up once or twice per year. Because of the importance of annual spring AC maintenance, do this before the summer season to ensure your system is ready for the summer months.
Follow This AC Maintenance Checklist
Keeping your air conditioning system in top condition isn’t something you leave to chance. It requires constant AC servicing over the years to ensure your AC continues working efficiently and doesn’t break down. Follow the AC maintenance checklist above to do what you can to avoid AC issues.
